The Creation and Importance of Area Rugs

Hi friends!  In this blog post, I’ll be talking about the creation and importance of area rugs and why I love using them in my home and on any surface.  I’ve often been asked, “why add a rug on top of carpet?”  The answer is simple… There’s no rule that says you can’t.  In my opinion, rugs add dimension and layering to a space; making it feel more cozy!  Rugs can also make a room seem bigger with their size, color and pattern.  Want to change the look of a space?  Try adding a new rug!

Have you ever wondered how rugs are made?  I’ve partnered with my friends at Arhaus to share one of my favorite rugs in our home… The Nadia Rug!  Before I begin sharing how it was made, let’s talk about choosing the right size for your space.  We made sure to go bigger, to insure we would see plenty of this gorgeous pattern.  Our bedroom measures 15’x17′, so we went with a 9’x13′, it’s the perfect size for our bedroom and immediately made it feel bigger in here!

It’s definitely a labor of love when creating this hand woven Nadia Rug from Arhaus.

Learning these details really help me to appreciate all the hard work that goes in to making one!

What better way to share the process than with pictures of the makers themselves!  I just loved receiving these images from my sweet friends at Arhaus.

Here are some interesting facts you should know…

The total number of artisans involved in making one rug is between 25-30!  That’s amazing, isn’t it?

The total number of days it takes to complete one rug is 90-100 days of craftsmanship!

You may be wondering… What type of materials do they use when making this rug?  The composition consists of 60% Viscose, 20% Natural Wool and 20% Cotton.

It takes about 20 steps/processes to create a hand woven rug.  Below is a list of those steps to better understand what’s involved.

1 – CAD Drawing (Computer Aided Designing)

2 – Procuring raw yarn

Procure – To obtain something with care and effort.

3 – Raw yarn sorting as per the color

4 – Raw yarn washing

5 – Yarn spinning in that particular count and type

6 – Yarn hank making

A hank is a different way of selling yarn in which the yarn is loosely wound into a large ring shape and then twisted on itself to make a package that’s easy to ship and store.  If you untwist the hank, you’ll have a big ring of yarn that needs to be wound into a ball before it is used.

7 – Yarn thread Kholai (each thread is individually separated for weaving)

8 – Warp and weft making for weaving

Warp and weft are the two basic components used in weaving to turn thread or yarn into fabric.  The lengthwise or longitudinal warp yarns are held stationary in tension on a frame or loom while the transverse weft (sometimes referred to as woof) is drawn through and inserted over-and-under the warp.

9 – Weaving of rug

10 – Carpet checking after it’s woven

11 – Clipping and trimming

Learning more about these hand woven rugs and the time and work that goes into each one, gives me a deeper appreciation for the artisans.

It’s understandable why they are an investment piece for your home.  Here are a few close up pictures of the Nadia Rug.

I hope you enjoyed learning more about the creation and importance of area rugs.  Prior to this research, I took advantage of this fine craftsmanship.  I’m very grateful to the men and women behind this rug and felt it was important to pass it along to all of you!  For more information on other hand woven rugs from Arhaus,  visit their website at www.arhaus.com

About Alicia

Alicia of Our Vintage Nest

My name is Alicia Armstrong; thank you for being here!
Ever since I can remember, I've been exposed to interior decorating. Watching my mom decorate and antique shop is a vivid childhood memory. Since starting this blog in 2016, my taste in decor has evolved to a more refined style. I've never leaned toward trendy, but more of a classic and timeless style. I enjoy shopping my home and changing things up to update a space. I love working on relatively simple projects and seeing a piece of furniture or room transform on a small budget. We purchased a new home four years ago and while there's nothing that needs to be renovated, I'm constantly finding something to enhance. I've painted several rooms, added shiplap, designed built-ins for a homework station and updated builder grade tile since moving here in 2016.
I've been married to my husband, Chris for 20 years. He works as an IT engineer for a small business. We have two children and reside in NW Arkansas. We are a Christian family who desires to live a life with Christ at the center. We have two animals, a Golden Retriever, Paisley and a blue point Ragdoll, Angel. They definitely complete our family and bring us a lot of joy!
I'm happy you've found Our Vintage Nest, where I share inspiration for all things home. I hope to inspire you to love your home, re-purpose what you have through simple DIY and learn some practical design tips along the way.
